If aspiring artists know that artists suffer for their work there is a likelihood they will see suffering as a gateway toward being a ‘real’ artist. The problem however is that once the aspiring artist knows that suffering will get them what they want it is probable that the suffering is no longer suffering at all.
There are grounds to claim that suffering then becomes a joy or at the very least is seen as a tool, something else to practice along side the artistic skills.
You cannot suffer if you want to suffer. As I assume people who take part in BDSM would tell you there is great pleasure in pain if you want it to happen. Suffering is then a paradox because it brings the ultimate pleasure and happiness.
Really then no artist can genuinely suffer for their work. At least not if they are aware of the history of western art tradition and buy into the cliché of the starving artist.
